Animal breeding is the art and science of improving the traits of domestic animals in order to produce desired characteristics. Animal breeding can be accomplished through selecting animals for breeding with superior characteristics in growth rate, egg, meat, milk, or wool production, or other desirable traits. The scientific theory of animal breeding incorporates population genetics, quantitative genetics, statistics, and recently molecular genomics.
Degree requirements for this program are:
- BSc (Hons) Animal Husbandry (6-year post-Matric) OR BSc (Hons) Poultry Science/BS (4 year) Poultry Science/ BSc (Hons) Agriculture (Major Animal Science)/BSc (Hons) Animal Science/DVM/equivalent veterinary course degree with minimum 45% marks or 2.5/4.0 CGPA, and having Punjab Domicile ( with qualifying deficiency courses, along with undergraduate classes, if and as prescribed by the respective board of studies).
The graduates of the degree can go on to have challenging careers in a large variety of different fields. Many fill positions in animal production. These opportunities require technical, personnel, and management training and can lead to jobs in livestock, poultry, egg and dairy units as well as horse farms, zoos, pet animal breeders and other related industries. Additional career opportunities exist in agribusiness, technical service, teaching, veterinary science and laboratory animal care.
